This design plays on one of the most iconic lines in sci-fi history — “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that” — and gives it a cheeky twist that’s both timely and smart. With the “AI” in “afraid” highlighted in white, and a wry follow-up at the bottom that reads “HAL GET ME COAT”, it manages to say a lot with very little. It nods to the growing presence of artificial intelligence in our everyday lives, while gently mocking both our fears of it — and the dramatic way it’s been portrayed for decades. But it’s more than just a clever quote. It’s a layered wink to those who grew up with Kubrick and Clarke and those who are now navigating the AI age with equal parts awe and eye-roll. HAL’s cool, menacing logic becomes the setup for a bit of British-style deadpan humour — suddenly, our ominous robot villain feels like he’s about to leg it down the pub. The result is a meta, minimalist joke that still leaves room for reflection: who’s really in control here, and what are we actually afraid of?
